Alameda, Alameda County
Alameda was a peninsula until 1902, when a tidal canal was cut through to the bay and made it an island. The city has one of the largest collections of Victorian houses in the Bay Area, thousands of them on quiet tree-lined blocks. From 1917 to 1939 crowds came by ferry and streetcar to Neptune Beach, a bayside amusement park near the foot of Webster Street.
